The Ironsides entertained a Blackwood Stars side on the Rec Saturday, with the conditions set up for an entertaining encounter with both teams having a difficult start in 3A.
The Ironsides started very well and it was great to see a number of injuries starting to filter back into the team. The Ironsides started well with the returning Scott Jones putting scoring the first try of the afternoon, however the following conversion was missed. Some early indiscipline allowed The Stars to slit a penalty over, and the match was balanced with both sides battling hard. However indiscipline from Blackwoods No.2 saw him see yellow, which very quickly turned to red, putting his pack and team under pressure for the remainder of the game.
Shortly after the Ironsides scored a further try converted by Matthew Williams and put the hosts 10-3 up going into the break.
The second half was all one way for a good 25-30 minutes with the Ironsides naturally dominating the scrums and forward play and as a result a further two tries were scored by Scott Jones putting him on a hat-trick for the day and Gavin Hek converted both tries to put the Irons 24 - 3 up and a first win was looking on the cards!
However a spirited fight back from the Stars saw them score a converted try which saw the scores at 24-10. However the come back was not meant to be with Jordan Davies going over late in the game and Gavin Hel converting successfully
A welcome win for the Ironsides and the next game against Chepstow is massive based on the current league table. Additionally was great to see a debut for Mark Lewis in the front row.
Well done the Irons! Let’s start building for Chepstow!
